The right place, the right time, the right cost The complexity of a modern aircraft and the far flung nature of our operations mean that we face huge logistic and supply chain challenges. Supply chain management is all about acquiring the right parts and ensuring they are delivered to our engineers where and when they are needed at the right cost. It's critical to our performance as an airline and as a business. When done well, all that's noticed is a smooth, professional operation. Components are where they are required, budgeting targets are met and aircraft aren't subject to unscheduled delays in the hangers. Our supply chain operation is based at The Link, a purpose built site outside Heathrow. Here our people work together in an open plan environment to manage the supply and distribution of components across the British Airways fleet - everything from avionics and engine components to cabin carpets and the new Club World seat. Our managers not only work with the numerous different suppliers currently on our database, they also become involved in devising specifications. This brings them into close contact with British Airways marketing professionals, our design teams and specialists in fields such as ergonomics. Because we draw on so many different skills, we are characterised by a flat, project based management structure. Our people have the opportunity to diversify into all the different facets of supply chain management, from logistics and procurement to project management. |
