A Siberian tiger, a Formula 1 racing car, a consignment of DVD players, a thirty by twenty foot Persian carpet? these are just a few of the items we've helped distribute around the globe. British Airways World Cargo is the world's fifth largest international cargo airline, a core British Airways business, and a profit centre in its own right. We're a worldwide operation with UK stations at Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow airports, carrying almost a million tonnes of freight, mail and courier shipments every year. Ascentis, our cargo terminal at Heathrow, is one of the largest and most advanced automated freight handling systems in the world, the size of six football pitches. It's a cargo operation for the 21st Century, with elevated transfer vehicles replacing forklift trucks and a new bar-coding system which helps us instantly track a piece of freight at any point on its journey. It's also linked to Carrus - our business centre designed along the same lines as our corporate headquarters, Waterside. Together Ascentis and Carrus are supported by a Cargo operation at Gatwick and a new perishables centre at Heathrow which handles our ever increasing fruit, vegetables and meat business. We also have a Special Handling Centre at Heathrow where couriers and express delivery customers can turn up with packages and have them on a flight within an hour. As a leading member of the industry body Cargo 2000, we have established electronic trading processes that allow our customers to trade via the web. But automation certainly hasn't replaced the human touch - we're a people focused business, dedicated to delivering outstanding service to freight customers around the world. We have all the specialist functions you'd expect in a multimillion pound global organisation - from marketing and finance to IT and business planning. Most of our Team Leaders, Shift Managers and Business Managers are recruited from within, but from time to time there are opportunities to join us in this capacity. There are many other roles on offer and everyone - manual workers and professionals alike - need to be customer-focused, able to respond efficiently to deadlines, and committed to the highest quality standards. |
